The Open Exchange for Self-Driving Car Data

DriveAI has passed several milestones since we first started. Within our first year, we doubled the size of the group, held our first demo, and shared our ideas at TEDx Navesink. We’ve now begun work on the next phase.

In order for this to happen, we need to work more cohesively. We’re creating an incentivized decentralized data system that will provide quality data and encourage everyone to contribute quickly and easily. As we all know, centralized systems cost too much money and require far too much maintenance to keep running.

The most important part of developing complex software is access to the most varied type of data.

The most important part of developing complex software is access to the most varied type of data. No one company can amass as much data as a dedicated community of people working across the world to better themselves and each other.

Today, all of the leading companies have restricted their data so they can maintain their proprietary algorithms which is incredibly irresponsible. It’s obvious what happens when profit is the clear motive behind advanced algorithms. From regulators to even the developers building the software, only a few understand. (Hint: think 2008 but this time with heavy machinery).

Building the network

As a community, we can collect data, manage it, and support each other’s efforts. By decentralizing data with systems like BitTorrent we’ll provide everyone access without the need to spend a lot of money on infrastructure.

How to access data inside a mega-corp

Since larger companies will access our network without seeding their own data, they’ll need to pay. We’ll regulate this system via Ethereum contracts similar to WebTorrent. The people responsible for producing the data will be paid as well as the network, so we all benefit. The proceeds will be used to develop more ambitious technology as a community.

When all our work and progress can be followed by our loved ones, colleagues, and regulators then we’ll learn together. This gives everyone the opportunity to be heard during the development of the system without having to organize complex lobbying efforts to develop consensus.

“People are most effective when they work together with friends solving real problems.”

We can all jump in and start building or find a local meetup to learn more. People are most effective when they work together with friends solving real problems on their own terms. Being part of a great community helps foster creation further.

That’s what we hope to enable with a decentralized network where we all share code, data, and progress without having to wait for approval.

For us to build powerful applications, we need to be more forthcoming with data, how it’s shared, and interpreted. Let’s work together to evolve the global transportation system and build the most fun organization to solve complex problems.

Here’s the plan

  1. Right now, we’ll help people connect their existing data sources to our network.
  2. Next, build out a sensor kit to help people collect valuable data.
  3. Then, create a test harness facility for members to execute and monitor their data.
  4. The community will use all of this to build a fully automated vehicle.
